Investigations

Criminal Investigation Division

The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for initiating in-depth investigations and conducting follow-up investigations originating from the Uniform Patrol Division. The Hagerstown Police Department's CID is comprised of one lieutenant who oversees all of the department's investigative services units and nine detectives who are overseen by two sergeants.

Criminal investigators use a variety of techniques to solve crimes, including information development, interviews and interrogations, identification, collection, preservation and use of physical evidence, and surveillance. The criminal investigators also review and analyze documents, conduct searches and assist in prosecution.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Division often receive specialized training in order to prepare them for a wide range of investigations that are assigned to them.
