Clara Barton Memorial

The Clara Barton Memorial, located along the Hagerstown Cultural Trail, pays tribute to the “Florence Nightingale of America”, the first nurse to be given permission to be on a battlefield under fire. She tended to wounded soldiers at the Civil War Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg, Maryland in 1862, and later helped to create the American Red Cross.

The bronze sculpture, located at 320 Virginia Avenue in Hagerstown, was sculpted by Washington County resident and artist Toby Mendez. The project was funded by private contributions, a Maryland Heritage Area grant, and in-kind and cash contributions from the City of Hagerstown. The memorial was dedicated on May 7, 2024.
