Street Hagerstown has been designated as an accredited Main Street America
program for meeting rigorous performance standards set by the National Main
Street Center. Each year, the National Main Street Center and its
partners announce the list of accredited Main Street America programs to
recognize their outstanding commitment to preservation-based economic
development and community revitalization through the Main Street
Approach. And for the third consecutive year, Main Street Hagerstown is pleased
to be recognized on that short list.
are proud to acknowledge this year’s 840 nationally accredited Main Street
America programs that have worked tirelessly to strengthen their communities”,
said Patrice Frey, President & CEO of the National Main Street
Center. “Main Street America Accredited communities are part of a
powerful movement of changemakers, and their dedication to improving quality of
life in the places they call home is inspiring.”
Street Hagerstown works in conjunction with the National Main Street Center to
identify the local programs that meet ten performance standards. Main
Street Hagerstown’s national recognition is a reflection in large part of the
dedication of the many local volunteers who have dedicated themselves to consistently
exceeding those evaluation benchmarks. 2018 highlights included adding
two new downtown events—Sweets on the Street and the Chalk Art
Festival, in addition to putting on the Christkindl Markt holiday event for the second straight year. The program was also responsible for hosting a pair of downtown beautification days and updating the holiday light pole banners. It also launched the Open for Business campaign to raise public awareness that downtown businesses remain open during the Urban Improvement Project construction.
Street Hagerstown is proud to have contributed to the sum total of Main Street
America programs that were instrumental in generating billions of dollars in
local reinvestment, aiding in the opening of thousands of new businesses
responsible for creating tens of thousands of new jobs, helping rehabilitate
nearly 10,000 historic buildings, and registering over two million volunteer
hours just last year.
Street Hagerstown is a program of the City Department of Community and Economic
Development in partnership with the downtown business community and volunteers.
