Traffic Advisory: S. Potomac St., Washington County Public Schools Begin

The 2018-2019 school year for the Washington County Public School (WCPS) system begins on Tuesday, September 4th.  With the ongoing construction on South Potomac Street for the Maryland Theatre and the expansion of the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts (BISFA), transportation patterns for BISFA students must change from previous years.  School bus drop-off and pick-up will take place at the rear of the school, behind the Washington County District Court building.  Parents dropping off and picking up students will use reserved parking spaces on West Washington Street; no parent drop-off/pick-up will be permitted on S. Potomac Street.

The City anticipates that there may be some confusion and traffic congestion caused by the afternoon parent pick-up cycle, particularly during the first week of the school season.  Motorists driving through the downtown core during BISFA’s afternoon dismissal period (3:30 – 5:00 PM) may experience delays and traffic congestion.  The City and WCPS staff will monitor traffic conditions, and will make adjustments as warranted to minimize congestion and delays.
