Augustoberfest Primed to Celebrate Hagerstown's German Heritage for 23rd Year

Alp Horns at Augustoberfest

Augustoberfest, the area's largest German heritage festival, proudly gears up for its 23rd year of recognizing and celebrating Bavarian culture, entertainment, and festivities in the Hagerstown area. The event will be held in the Central Lot off of North Potomac Street in the heart of downtown Hagerstown on Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19.  While commemorating the area's German culture, this event also benefits the Augustoberfest Charitable Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports German heritage-related programs, provides scholarships for exchange students to visit Hagerstown's sister city, Wesel, Germany, and when possible, contributes funding to support other local educational institutions.

Festivities begin on Saturday with a non-competitive walk sponsored by the Antietam Pathfinders Volksmarch Club at 8am.  Combining fun, fitness, and fellowship, this 10K walk takes place through City Center and Hagerstown's beautiful City Park.  There is also a 5K walk for those who prefer a shorter distance.

The main gates in the Central Lot open at 10:30am, and the beer barrels are rolled out at 11 - when the party begins!  At 2pm, Mayor Bob Bruchey and other City and County officials will perform the official kegtapping.  While revelers enjoy a taste of German food and drink reminiscent of a traditional Oktoberfest, live musical entertainment will be provided by die Schlauberger, Heidi and Heimat Echo Band, and Alt Washingtonia Schuhplattler Verein.  The large children's area will feature Horn's Punch and Judy Show, story time, and various arts and crafts activities.

On Sunday, the gates are open from 10:30am to 5pm. The annual Frühschoppen brunch will feature the finest buffet-style Bavarian food and drink from 11am to 2pm. Frühschoppen tickets are sold separately and availability is limited.  For prices and to reserve your tickets, call 301-739-8577, ext. 116.

General admission to Augustoberfest is $5 each day and children 12 and under are admitted free of charge with a paying adult.  Tickets can be purchased the day of the event at the gate.

Only service animals are permitted in the festival area, and shirts and shoes are required.  Guests must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages; no alcoholic beverages or food can be brought in at the gate.  No audio or video recording equipment is allowed.  All packs, parcels, and bags are subject to inspection.  Performing acts are subject to change without notice.
