Work exempt from Building Permits

  • Detached residential storage buildings and similar structures not exceeding 100 square feet in area
  • Retaining walls not over 4’ from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall unless supporting a surcharge or impounding Class I, II, or IIIA liquids
  • Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, countertops, and similar finish work
  • Private sidewalks and private driveways not exceeding 30 inches above grade (A driveway apron permit may be required if installation is a new driveway) 
  • Swings and other playground equipment accessory to detached one and two family dwellings
  • Prefabricated residential swimming pools less than 24 inches deep and do not exceed 5000 gallons and are entirely above ground
  • Residential window awnings supported by exterior wall and projecting no greater than 54 inches
  • Movable counters, cases, and partitions not over 5 feet 9 inches in height
  • Oil derricks
  • Water tanks supported directly on grade not exceeding 5000 gallons and a height/diameter ratio of 2:1
  • Temporary motion picture, television, and theater sets and scenery 

Work that may be exempt from Building Permits

  • At-grade slabs, patios, decks less than 8 inches in height
  • Deck/porch decking only replacement
  • Masonry pointing, where no removal of block/brick/stone is necessary
  • Stairs that are three rises or less and no new landing
  • Vinyl siding
  • Soffit/fascia
  • Gutters/Spouting, the new installation shall not create a nuisance
  • Window/door replacement of the same size
