Traffic Control Division

Responsibilities & Services

The Traffic Control Division of Public Works plays an integral part in ensuring the safety of our roads. There are a total of 131 intersections controlled by traffic signals; 96 intersections are owned by the City and the remaining 35 are owned by the State of Maryland but maintained by our department. Our staff works closely with the Parks & Engineering Department and the State of Maryland on changes to traffic signalization and other traffic control issues.

The sign crew takes care of all signs, manufacturing many right here in our own workshop. Other duties are line striping including parking spaces, street markings such as turn arrows and stop bars, and the painting of red curbs.

We provide traffic control support for the City of Hagerstown’s well-known events like Alsatia Mummers Parade and Thunder in the Square, to name a few. When our city center, City Park, and many other locations brighten up during the holiday season, we have been hard at work for many weeks prior. Pole wraps, Christmas trees and silhouettes transform Hagerstown into a winter wonderland each year.
