The Engineering Division is responsible for monitoring traffic flow through the city’s streets, and for identifying and attempting to resolve congestion issues. One of the basic methods used to analyze traffic conditions is to actually count the number of vehicles passing by a specific point in a given time period. These counts are typically performed by automated traffic counting machines; however, at street intersections, the number of vehicles and the turning movements that they make are often counted manually by observers. The data collected by these counts are converted into Average Daily Traffic (ADT) or Peak Hour values; you can view a
ADT map showing values on City streets. The Maryland State Highway Administration’s website also has a
tool that can be used to find ADT values for various streets and highways throughout the State.
