These events will raise awareness of the benefits of bicycling while simultaneously allowing individuals to enjoy a number of beautiful venues in Hagerstown without having to pay for gasoline.”
Mr. Mittel went on to say that Hagerstown’s Bicycle Advisory Committee encourages everyone to participate.

• Ride in the right-most lane that goes in the direction that you are traveling

• Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings

Dedication at Hagerstown Railroad Museum

The City of Hagerstown will be unveiling a plaque honoring John Long at the Hagerstown Railroad Museum in City Park on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 2 p.m.

According to Historic Facilities Coordinator John Bryan, John Long had a life-long love of trains. His desire to preserve the legacy of the Western Maryland Railroad in the Hub City led him to approach the Hagerstown City Council in September of 1982 to buy the Locomotive 202, which had fallen into disrepair, for the symbolic sum of $1. He pledged to spend $20,000 refurbishing it and promised to maintain it as long as he lived- an oath he more than kept. Although it took longer than he anticipated, the Locomotive was refurbished in 1993 and was opened for public viewing. Mr. Long created the 202 foundation, and while he was the engine’s curator and lovingly and tirelessly watched over her as a City Employee, he took not one dime for this work. John generously deferred his salary to build a fund which led to the creation of the Hagerstown Railroad Museum in City Park in 2005 as well as the cosmetic restoration of 202 in 2007 and the restoration of the cabooses in 2008. Although the work is not done, the funds Mr. Long left will go to achieving his ultimate dream of getting the 202 running once again.

The Unveiling Ceremony will consist of remarks from Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II and the planting of a Japanese Coral Maple Tree donated by Family Tree.
The Hagerstown Railroad Museum features hundreds of signs, signals, bells, telephones and tools that were used by railroad workers every day. Most of the items in this significant collection came from the Western Maryland Railroad Company. Of special interest are an 1885 Pump Car and an 1875 Velocipede; both vehicles transported workers to rails or rail cars to make repairs.
The crown jewel of the museum is Steam Engine 202. This Locomotive was built in 1912 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and carried passengers and baggage between Baltimore and Hagerstown. It was retired in 1953. Totaling 77 feet in length, the engine weighs 415,000 pounds. Steam Engine 202 is the only Western Maryland road-type steam locomotive left in existence.

Maymart - May 5th

The City of Hagerstown will host Maymart from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2011 in Hagerstown’s Public Square. The rain date for this event is Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Maymart is an annual event in Hagerstown’s City Center that kicks off the Spring season.

Maymart consists of vendors, selling a wide variety of goods from plants and flowers to produce, crafts, jewelry, gifts, and artwork! It is a terrific way to celebrate springtime and the beginning of a wonderful season in Hagerstown’s City Center. Maymart is held each year the Thursday before Mother’s Day, so it’s a perfect time to pick up a gift for mom, take her to lunch at one of the wonderful City Center eateries or spend the day together at this vibrant event.

Historically Maymart has always been a celebration of the bounties of spring, originating as an event known as Flowermart. Flowermart vendors offered primarily a selection of plants and flowers, but over the years as the event grew with vendors offering a wider variety of goods including crafts and gifts, Flowermart was renamed, Maymart, to encompass all of the joys of the season. This year’s Maymart will feature Hagerstown Beautification Committee giving away tree seedlings. Lou Scally with WJEJ will host a live remote on Public Square during the event.

During Maymart, the Hagerstown Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau will be hosting a book signing by Hagerstown’s Development Planner and Zoning Administrator Stephen Bockmiller. The book is entitled Hagerstown in the Civil War and is a compilation of photos and illustrations tied together with a running narrative that helps the reader understand the role the City played in the Civil War.

Maymart is sponsored by Antietam Cable Television, Home and Garden Television (HGTV) and the City of Hagerstown. For more information on this event individuals may call 301.739.8577, extension 116 or 183.
