Police Officer - Entry Level

The Hagerstown Police Department seeks motivated individuals interested in pursuing a rewarding career in law enforcement. 

The Hagerstown Police Department is a full service, progressive, community-oriented and nationally accredited law enforcement agency. We are a full-service agency serving a population of approximately 40,000 citizens. Our patrol division is comprised of 4 squads working 12-hour days with rotating days off. The patrol division also has a dedicated Downtown Squad that patrols primarily on bicycles in our business and Arts & Entertainment district. The Department has several specialty units such as the Criminal Investigation Division, Narcotics Task Force, K-9, Warrant Squad, Special Response Team (SWAT), Crisis Negotiators and several School Resource Officers. In addition to the benefits listed, officers who live within the City are eligible for the take-home car program.

Testing is open to the public with seating on a first come-first serve basis.  Please check the "Testing" page of this website for updated testing information. The written test will consist of a 25 minute study guide review followed by the actual test. Applicants scoring 70% or higher will be invited to the physical qualification test (PQT) which will take place at a later date. They wwill be notified by email of the PQT date, time, and location. 

Applicants who accept an offer of employment, will be required to sign a 3 year commitment with the Police Department. Once committed, the applicant will be slotted into the next available police academy class. Classes typically run Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM. However, the Academy Director can, and will, change hours as needed. To be certified for solo patrol following academy graduation, he or she is required to successfully complete a field training program which runs approximately 4 months.
