Gas Leak Causes Evacuation of North Locust Street

On Thursday, April 19th Engine 3, Truck 1, Utility 3 and Captain 30 were alerted for an Emergency Flooding Condition at a row house in the 200 block of North Locust Street. Units found a flooding condition as well as an inside natural gas leak due to thieves stealing pipes from the structure. Captain 30 established Command and additional units were called as explosive levels of natural gas were found in all three residences located in the row house. Crews worked with Columbia Gas and HPD to evacuate the entire 200 block of North Locust Street, contain the gas leak and ventilate the structures involved.

Two-Alarm Apartment Building Fire with Fatalities

On Wednesday, April 18th a Box Alarm was struck bringing Engines 5, 2 and 4, Truck 1, Tower 26 (Halfway), Utility 3, BC3 and Medic 75-4 (CRS) for the Apartment Fire at 334 Summit Avenue. Information to BC3 was that there were four occupants reported trapped inside the apartment on the third floor. Utility 3 arrived first to find fire showing from the rear of the building and an injured occupant out front confirmed three occupants were still trapped on the third floor. FD1 arrived and assumed the Summit Avenue Command.

Crews began an aggressive attack on the fire and search for the victims. Search crews were able to locate the victims and remove a child from the structure before the evacuation was sounded for deteriorating fire conditions. Upon re-entry into the structure after a defensive operation, crews were able to locate a viable victim and removed the victim from the structure.

Crews worked several hours to extinguish the fire and assisting the Fire Marshal’s Office with their investigation. To date, two of the occupants have passed away, one occupant has been released from the hospital and the fourth occupant remains in the Trauma Center.
