Park Improvement Projects
The City's Parks & Recreation Division is constantly working to improve our park system, including the addition of amenities at each park, upgrades to existing facilities, or the development of totally new parks. Below is a list of current and planned projects - for more information, please contact the Parks & Recreation Division at 301-739-8577 ext. 169.
Memorial Park
The City is currently in the planning and design stage for Memorial Park, a small park area with a focus on recognizing and honoring veterans and/or worthy citizens who have contributed to our community. The park will be located at the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and S. Potomac Street, diagonal from Rose Hill Cemetery. The park can be used for formal memorial events, but will also include a passive area where citizens can visit and remember those memorialized there. Preliminary construction is scheduled for the summer of 2012.

Greenawalt Park
The City is proceding with the development of a small "pocket" park at the intersection of N. Locust Street and East Avenue. The purpose of this park is to improve the livability of the immediate neighborhood, and to provide open green space and a play area for the community. The park is named for Margaret Greenawalt, a Hagerstown resident who ran a confectionery during the Civil War. Demolition of existing structures at the site began in March 2012, with final construction expected to be completed by the fall of 2012.
Kiwanis Park
The City, working with the Kiwanis Club of Hagerstown, is proceding with the development of a small park/recreational facility at the Light Business Park. This park, to be developed on land donated by the owner of the business park, will provide a launching area for canoes and kayaks onto Antietam Creek. Construction of the park is expected to begin in the spring of 2013.
Hellane Park Walkway Improvements
The City, through funding from the Community Development Block Grant program, has completed improvements to the existing pedestrian walkways at Hellane Park. This work included the overlay of existing bituminous-paved trails, and the widening of other trails that were narrow or in poor condition. The goal of this project was to improve accessibility, and to enhance the walking experience for neighborhood residents and park users.
