Traffic Calming

The Downtown Enhancement Plan recommended a variety of traffic calming measures to reduce traffic noise and congestion and to enhance the pedestrian environment in the downtown shopping and government center around Public Square. The State Highway Administration(SHA) implemented the plan´s recommendations in a roadway improvement project on Route 40 through downtown in 2000 and 2002. This project reconstructed many intersections to increase the sidewalk areas, shorten pedestrian crossing distances, and to slow traffic through the more constricted travel space. The SHA project also introduced brick paving in the crosswalks at key intersections as an additional means of alerting motorists that they are entering a pedestrian zone.
