Works The Public Works Department currently consists of thirty-four full time positions: (1) manager, (3) supervisors, (2) assistants and (28) field personnel. There are (2) part-time positions which are the Downtown Rangers and, for seven months of the year, our workforce increases by (8) additional seasonal employees. The full time employees are a union workforce that negotiate wages, benefits and working conditions. The department is comprised of three separate divisions. The Street Department, Traffic Control/Facilities Maintenance and the Central Maintenance Garage (CMG). The street division of Public Works oversees the maintenance of the streets including pothole repairs, street sweeping, trash collection from city trash receptacles, bulk trash collection, mowing of public right-of-ways and storm drain maintenance (remove dead animals, Christmas tree collection, special events, community assistance, traffic island planting). The department has one supervisor, thirteen full time employees, two part time employees and seven seasonals. This department oversees the Downtown Rangers, the Bulk Trash Collection program and the annual dumpster program. The Traffic Control/Facilities Maintenance division oversees the maintenance of the traffic signals, street line painting and street signs. We work hand-in-hand with the Engineering Department for descriptions of the work to be done or the signals that need changed. Engineering investigates the need for a change (signs, lines, or signal timing) and gives us a work order. We perform the actual installation. This department also oversees the maintenance of several city owned buildings: City Hall, Elizabeth Hager Center, Roslyn Building, Shed. Crews paint, repair walls, construct new walls ie general maintenance. They also work on larger projects such as the elevator renovation and parking deck repairs. The department has one supervisor, eleven full time employees and one seasonal employee. The Central Maintenance Garage (CMG) oversees the maintenance of the city's vehicles and equipment except for the fire department. The city currently operates over (300) pieces of equipment including police cruisers, pickups, dump trucks, heavy equipment such as backhoes, tractors, bucket trucks, and mowers. They are located on Baltimore Street in the City Light Department building. It is their responsibility to keep the city fleet up and running especially during snow storms. |
