Citizenship; High School diploma or certificate of GED recognized by the Maryland Board of Education; valid Maryland driver's license; eyesight correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye; must be at least 21 years of age; pass a standard physical fitness test based on sex and age.Process Interested persons must notify the City of Hagerstown Human Resources Department, 1 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21740, or call (301) 790-3200, ext. 108 to be notified of the next written test date.Applicants are notified of the entrance level examination date and location. Applicants who pass the written test go before an oral interview board consisting of at least three (3) police officers. An established minimum passing score is required. The most highly qualified applicants will go before a second oral interview board consisting of the Police Department Administration. Selections for employment are from among the top applicants and take into consideration such factors as relevant experience, educational background, affirmative action goals, and other job related criteria. Some of the other divisions or units in which officers may find themselves assigned include the Criminal Investigation Division, Juvenile Unit, Washington County Narcotics Task Force, Warrant Squad, Traffic Unit, K-9, Planning & Research, Crime Prevention/Community Relations, Street Crimes Unit, and Special Response Team. Often, officers are also provided specialized training to fill technical positions such as breath test technician, accident reconstructionist, firearms instructor, and defensive tactics instructor. Applicants who are not hired during any selection process may reapply for the position and go through the next process unless the applicant:
Generally, at least one selection process will be conducted per year to establish an eligibility list for actual or forecasted vacancies. The process may be repeated more than once per year as needed to accommodate Police Department needs. The selection process from the time of the written test to the time the background investigation is complete can take up to 6 months. The background investigation is generally the last step before a conditional offer of employment is made. |
