Hagerstown's Heritage

Preservation Month: The Governor has proclaimed May as Maryland Preservation Month "to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people." The City of Hagerstown celebrates Preservation Month each year with a Preservation Awards Ceremony. For information about the awards program, contact the Hagerstown Planning Office at (301) 739-8577, ext. 139, or E-Mail at planning@hagerstownmd.org

Walking Tours: The City has sponsored the creation of several brochures for self-guided walking tours of various aspects of our community's heritage. Presently available:

Downtown Churches Walking Tour, Downtown Civil War Walking Tour, and Downtown Walking Tour. For information about guided walking tours of the historic districts, contact the Visitor's Bureau at (301) 791-3246 and the Washington County Historical Society at (301) 797-8782.

Railroad Heritage: In 1994, the City sponsored the creation of Railroad Ties, by Susan Levitas. This general interest book documents Hagerstown's railroad heritage by sharing the experiences of retired railworkers, their family members, and former heads of rail-related industries from the city's railroading heyday. This book received a 1996 Maryland Heritage Book Award. Railroad Ties may be purchased in Hagerstown at the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum, and the Train Room. For information about railroad-related heritage events, contact the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum at (301) 739-4665.

Civil War Heritage: In 1997, the City sponsored the creation of Hagerstown: At the Crossroads in the Civil War, an illustrated report interpreting Hagerstown's Civil War history. The report was prepared by S. Roger Keller, a local historian, with contributions from an editorial advisory board of Civil War scholars. The report is available in the Washington County Free Library. For more information about Hagerstown's Civil War heritage, go to www.civilwarsites.com. Nearly 50 plaques have been installed in the City since 2009. An Arcadia book, Hagerstown in the Civil War, will be available at area stores in April 2011. A video on the Hagerstown Battle of 1963 will be available in July 2011.

African-American Heritage: In 2002, the City sponsored the creation of a historic context report and architectural survey of Hagerstown's African-American Heritage. In 2009, the City sponsored a collection assessment and Feasibility Study of the Doleman Black Heritage Museum.
