Railroad Heritage: In 1994, the City sponsored the creation of Railroad Ties, by Susan Levitas. This general interest book documents Hagerstown's railroad heritage by sharing the experiences of retired railworkers, their family members, and former heads of rail-related industries from the city's railroading heyday. This book received a 1996 Maryland Heritage Book Award. Railroad Ties may be purchased in Hagerstown at the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum, and the Train Room. For information about railroad-related heritage events, contact the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum at (301) 739-4665. Civil War Heritage: In 1997, the City sponsored the creation of Hagerstown: At the Crossroads in the Civil War, an illustrated report interpreting Hagerstown's Civil War history. The report was prepared by S. Roger Keller, a local historian, with contributions from an editorial advisory board of Civil War scholars. The report is available in the Washington County Free Library. For more information about Hagerstown's Civil War heritage, go to www.civilwarsites.com. |
