Energy Saving Tips

Lower Thermostat Settings

During the heating season keep your thermostat at about 65 degrees fahrenheit during the day and 60 degrees fahrenheit during the night. In the summer keep your thermostat at 72 degrees fahrenheit during the day and 76 degrees fahrenheit during the night.

Keep Your Heating and Air Conditioning System(s) In Top Shape

Have your furnace, air conditioner or heat pump system serviced once per year. Make sure you clean or replace your furnace filters regularly, depending on manufacturers´ recommendations and existing conditions. Make sure your air ducts and duct work (if utilizing a forced-air system) are free of obstructions and are properly sealed around joints. Check your windows and doors for proper sealing, including weatherstripping.

Use An Energy Efficient Electric Water Heater

With an energy efficient electric water heater, even though the initial cost is more than a standard unit, the money you save during the life of the unit will more than make up the difference. Most water heaters are set at a minimum of 140 degrees fahrenheit. By lowering the temperature, you can reduce the amount of electricity needed to maintain the higher setting. Try setting the temperature a few degrees lower at a time, until you find the best temperature to your satisfaction.

Use Lights Properly

Turn off lights when leaving a room. Use flourescent lighting whenever possible. Buy energy efficient bulbs. Just like the energy efficient water heater, the initial cost of the bulbs may be more but will be offset by long term savings.
