Curriculum Framework

Day One

The fire safety section of the two day curriculum shall be presented on the first day. Students shall be greeted at their bus by fire department personnel and welcomed to the village.

The instructor will speak briefly on what the two day experience will involve, how the visit to the village will be a fun learning experience, and why good behavior is essential.

The students will then enter the classroom.

Unit 1 -- Introduction Module

Objectives:

1.Students will explain why their visit to Children's Safety Village is an important learning experience.

Unit 2 -- Introduction to Fire and Injury Prevention

Objectives:

1.Students will explain how fires and injuries happen.

2.Students will explain how to prevent fires and injuries.

Unit 3 -- Introduction to Safety Tools

Objectives:

1.Students will identify safety tools.

2.Students will explain the purpose of safety tools.

Unit 4 -- Introduction to Fire Safety

Objectives:

1.Students identify fire as a powerful tool.

2.Students identify appropriate uses of fire as an adult's tool.

Students explain how fire can get out of control.

Unit 5 -- Preparing for a Fire Emergency

Objectives:

1.Students explain why smoke and fire can hurt people.

2.Students explain and demonstrate the use of smoke detectors.

3.Students explain and demonstrate how to escape a fire emergency.

Unit 6 - Getting Help in an Emergency

Objectives:

1.Students will identify 911 as an important telephone number to be used in emergencies only.

2.Students will identify examples of emergencies.

3.Students will identify emergency helpers.

4.Students will state their address.

5.Students will demonstrate the ability to access the 911 emergency system.

6.Students will demonstrate the ability to activate private and municipal fire alarms.

7.Students will identify emergency exit routes from public places.

Unit 7 -- Students visit "The Power of Fire"

Objectives:

1.Students will explain why adults must be careful with tools that can cause a fire.

2.Students will identify the chain of events that led to the destruction of the house they visited.

Unit 8 -- Students Tell What They Have Learned at Children's Safety Village

Objectives:

1.Students will identify something they learned today while at Children's Safety Village.

DAY TWO

Unit 1 -- Role of the Police Officer

Objectives:

1.The students will become familiar with the equipment and uniforms of police officers in our area.

2.The student will recognize the positive role of the police officer as a community helper.

Unit 2 -- Pedestrian Safety

Objectives:

1.The student will be able to identify "Walk" and "Don't Walk" signals.

2.The student will be able to identify appropriate places where streets may be crossed.

3.The student will be able to demonstrate the proper procedure in crossing the street.

Unit 3 -- Drug Safety

Objectives:

1.The student will learn a basic theme that will stay with them and be easily reinforced.

2.The student will be aware that drugs are only for sick people.

3.The student will be able to identify several common street names for drugs.

4.The student will be informed of where legal drugs come from and who should disperse drugs for a real illness.

5.The student will become cognizant of the fact that drugs may look appealing.

Unit 4 -- Bicycle Safety

Objectives:

1.The student will be able to describe how to select the right bicycle that fits the driver for safety and comfort.

2.The student will be aware that bicycles are under the same laws governing motor vehicles when operating on the road.

3.The student will be able to demonstrate the proper hand signals for stop, right and left turns.

4.The student will be able to recognize the most commonly used traffic signs including: Stop, Yield, Do Not Enter, Two Way Traffic, Pedestrian Crossing, Bike Crossing, and meaning of red circle with red slash on sign.

5.The student will become aware of tips for safer bicycling.

6.The student will be able to identify driving hazards.

Unit 5 -- Personal Safety

Objectives:

1.The student should be able to identify the "stranger" concept.

2.The student will be able to name people they feel safe to be around.

3.The student will be able to specify what action they will take when confronted by someone they don't know or trust (stranger).

4.The student will be aware of the importance of the magic word.

5.The student will be able to recognize good or safe touches and bad or unsafe touches.

6.The student will be able to single out persons to tell about a bad touch.
