Permits and Inspection

Construction Inspection

Provides inspection of all new construction:
  • Building
  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Mechanical
The BOCA Nation Building Code is enforced.

A twenty-four hour notice is required for inspection requests.

To speak with an inspector, call 301-790-0700 between 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Permits

Permits are required for:
  • All new buildings (including sheds)
  • Additions
  • Porch Enclosures
  • Decks
  • Fences
  • Retaining walls
  • Other Structures
All electrical work must be performed by City-licensed electricians. Electricians are responsible for securing electrical permits.

All plumbing work must be performed by City-licensed plumber. Plumbers are responsible for securing plumbing permits.

Permit applications are taken between the hours of 8:00 and 4:30, Monday through Friday in the Engineering and Inspections Department on the third floor of City Hall.

Building permits must be applied for in person. Electrical and Plumbing permits may be mailed along with the appropriate fee.

Building permits are usually issued within two weeks.

Electrical and plumbing permits are usually issued in one day.

The Engineering and Inspections Department maintains files relating to nearly every property within the City limits. These files contain histories of:
  • permits
  • inspection notes
  • code violations
  • building plans
  • other related documents

All information is open to the public and can be viewed if a request is made. Appointments are recommended. Call 301-790-4163 to schedule.
