Trash & Recycling FAQ
REFUSE
1. Q. When can I set out refuse/recycling/yard waste on the collection days?
A. Refuse/recycling/yard waste must be set out the day before collection between 4:00 p.m. but before midnight.
2. Q. Can I use plastic bags for refuse?
A. Yes, heavyweight plastic bags can be used for refuse only.
3. Q. Is there a maximum amount of refuse that can be set out?
A. There is “no” maximum amount, but residents are highly encouraged to recycle whenever possible to minimize the amount taken to the landfill.
RECYCLING
1. Q. Can I use other containers for recycling and not the bins?
A. Yes. If a container is clearly marked "RECYCLING" in large letters so it can be seen at night with lights from the truck.
2. Q. Can I put out recycling on both trash set-out nights?
A. No. Recycling is only set-out on one night per week and that night is determined by the zone that each property is in. To determine the correct zone for your property, contact the City of Hagerstown at 301-739-8577 extension 106
3. Q. Can I put out cardboard boxes that I used for moving?
A. Boxes can be put out for Mixed Paper recycling if the boxes are broken down into a size no larger than 3’ x 3’. It is preferable to use twine to bundle them, but they may also be stacked underneath the bin to keep from blowing.
YARD WASTE
1. Q. Can I put out branches loose?
A. No. Branches need to be bundled and no larger than 3 feet long and 2” in diameter.
2. Q. Can I use plastic bags?
A. Please, do not use plastic bags. Brown paper yard waste bags should be used.
3. Q. Can I put out yard waste in containers other than paper yard waste bags?
A. A container may be used but it should not be a 55-gallon drum and at no time should any container weigh over 50 lbs.
