Department of Parks and Engineering
Overview
The Department of Parks and Engineering has the unique opportunity to improve the livability and recreation opportunities for the citizens of Hagerstown. Through the construction of Capital Improvement Projects, providing excellent Parks and Recreational activities, and the implementing of residential recycling and trash programs, our Department affects every resident of Hagerstown on a daily basis. We take this responsibility very seriously and see it as an opportunity to improve life for the many that choose to live and do business in the City of Hagerstown.
The Parks and Recreation Division understand that quality of life is vital to the residents of Hagerstown. The numerous parks, facilities and recreational programs we provide contribute directly to the health and well-being of our entire Hagerstown community. Our goal is to provide all Hagerstown citizens high quality recreational and leisure opportunities in safe, modern and well maintained parks and facilities. We are constantly responding to change, developing new programs, adding and upgrading facilities, all so you can have an exceptional leisure experience!
The Engineering Division is primarily focused on street improvements, traffic flow, and storm water management. We are responsible for preparing construction documents for various Capital Improvement Projects identified in the City budget. These may include our annual pavement preservation program, construction of parking facilities, upgrades to storm drains and repairs to other public facilities. The Engineering Division staff prepares the contract documents, bids the projects, administers the contracts and inspects the work. The Division also reviews development plans prior to Planning Commission approval, provides tri-annual inspection of Storm Water Management structures; maintains a data-base of city streets, curbs and sidewalks and maintains the mapping for the City including development of our Geographic Information System database.
Residential Recycling and Trash Collection is provided by a private contractor administered by the Engineering Division. In addition to collecting residential trash at curbside twice each week, the City's contractor also collects yard waste, mixed paper, and commingled glass, plastic and aluminum recycling.
