Eastern Boulevard

Work crews from Charles E. Brake, Inc. continue to perform the preliminary utility and storm drainage system installation at various places along the Eastern Blvd. corridor. As of April 21, 2008 virtually 100% of the proposed water mains have been installed, along with approximately 80% of the new storm drainage pipes. The remaining storm drainage system work is in Professional Court, along Eastern Blvd. near Opal Court, and along Eastern Blvd. near Jefferson Blvd. The contractor expects to complete the majority of the storm drainage installation by May 5, 2008. A new natural gas main will be installed along the east side of Eastern Blvd. between the Community Rescue Service building and Professional Court in the coming weeks.

Beginning in early May, the contractor will begin the mass earthwork and grading operations needed to widen the roadway. This work will begin on the east side of Eastern Blvd., and will work from the vicinity of Conrad Court toward Jefferson Blvd. In order to provide sufficient room for the contractor to perform this work, traffic on Eastern Blvd. will be shifted toward the western side of the roadway. A new traffic control plan will be established to shift traffic away from the work area. Motorists are urged to remain alert to new traffic patterns as they approach the work zone. Temporary traffic delays and congestion are likely, and motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes around the Eastern Blvd. corridor while the work is being completed.

The purpose of this project is to provide additional travel lanes on this section of roadway to improve the flow of the ever increasing traffic in this corridor.

This project will include the removal of the existing pavement, utility line relocation, storm drainage improvements, and the construction of dual northbound and southbound lanes. Raised medians will be installed to separate opposing traffic in many locations, and turning lanes will be added at the major street intersections along the route. New sidewalks will be installed along the majority of the corridor, providing pedestrian connectivity between the existing businesses in the MKS Business Park and the Dual Highway corridor.

A new “partial” traffic signal will be installed at Opal Court to allow traffic to more easily make left turns onto Eastern Blvd (contact our office below for details).

The City awarded the construction contract to Craig Paving on August 14, 2007. The project is planned to be complete by the fall of 2008.

The project cost is $4.4 million. Funding for this project will be secured from the City’s General Fund, a City Bond Issue, and fees collected from developers constructing new buildings along the roadway corridor.

Questions regarding this important project should be directed to the City’s Department of Engineering & Code Administration at (301) 739-8577 extension 125.
